I’m sharing claugine, a CLI tool for OpenNebula — and a first step toward sharing the tools I use to automate my infrastructure.
I consider OpenNebula one of the best platforms for running virtual infrastructure and private or public clouds as well. My preference is to build the entire platform on free and open-source software, with commercial support where needed.
My current stack is:
- Ubuntu 26.04 as the host OS, with Linux kernel 7 being a key part here
- FRR 10.6 and VyOS 1.5 for networking — I use VyOS Stream
- Redfish for hardware management
- OpenNebula 7.4 to Rule them All. One platform to rule them all, if you catch the reference 🙂
There aren’t that many building blocks — especially compared with OpenStack. But each still needs to be managed.
I’ve spent more than 20 years building infrastructure with Microsoft Virtual Server, then Hyper-V, VMware, Nutanix, and various KVM-based solutions. And yes, OpenStack too. Let’s just say we’ve had our differences 🙂
My goal is to develop and share a set of tools for full lifecycle management of stack above — from initializing bare-metal servers to retiring the platform.
I already have tools covering that lifecycle, but most are tightly tied to my current environment. Making them useful to others takes a little more work.
So here is the result of my first small step in that direction . Sharing a CLI tool built around my recent OpenNebula tasks, then expanding from there.

I’ll keep improving it as I use it. Give it a try — feedback, issues, and ideas are welcome. I hope it saves you some work!
